Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a state of mind whereby the brain frequency is substantially lower than the frequency we have during our regular awake state (as we are going about our daily lives). Hypnosis can also be classified as an altered state of consciousness. When someone is under hypnosis the brain is in an Alpha state with the energy waves being 7-14 Hz (Hertz - cycles/second). At that frequency, our right side of the brain - our creative part - is activated. This side is where no time or space exists and we can access information which is normally buried deep inside ourselves.

William Maxwell, a Scottish physician during the 17th century, hypothesized that imagination and suggestion would influence one's ability to heal. After him there were many scientists who elaborated on this subject, although James Braid (1795-1860) also a Scottish physician, is known as the "father of hypnosis".

Today, we are more experienced in this area and therefore realize that hypnosis, or hypnotherapy, involves all levels of our body: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

The practices of complementary therapies are finding a proper place in healing and this trend rapidly being accepted in the medical field of Integrated Medicine.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of relaxation and/or a level of concentration that the average individual experiences every day. It is a form of guided relaxation where ideas/suggestions are being expressed in order to create a new awareness. A person must have a conscious desire to change and being in agreement with presented suggestions.

Hypnosis cannot detach the ego, and therefore it is impossible to have someone do something which is against their will. Nor can a person's memory be eased.

A common statement is "I cannot be hypnotized". This is because when a person is unwilling, hypnosis will not work. In general everyone can be hypnotized and they will not go to sleep. Hypnosis is a hyper-state of awareness, which feels very relaxing. It is not possible to recall a memory during sleep, and memories are usually the reason for seeking a solution via hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a wonderful way of exposing hidden issues, and to be able to work through them and release them in a safe way through guidance.

Hypnosis bypasses the critical mind, which tends to judge, and instead activates the subconscious mind where everything is possible. This gives the person freedom to alter and change feelings and habits that might have been customary in their lives for a long time. (That is why programs such as "Stop Smoking" and "Weight Reduction" are becoming more and more popular.)

Other areas, which can greatly benefit from hypnosis are:

  • Alcohol Cessation
